Do you feel like God might be mad at you or is giving you the silent treatment? In this article, I want to help you get on God’s good side and start living in a way that is sure to please the Lord. In fact, I’m going to give you 5 steps you can take today to get started!
With all the chaos you’ll encounter in life each day at work or school or even just driving around, it’s nice to feel like there is something much greater and more significant in your life. But what happens when the devil starts telling you that God isn’t listening to you anymore or that He must be mad at you? You start to get discouraged and lose hope, right? I know this has happened to me many times.

I want you to know that God doesn’t get mad at those who follow Him. He might discipline you if you practice poor behavior, but He doesn’t get mad or hate you. Too many people get the idea that God is filled with rage and is about ready to snap in a moment’s notice. I want you to know, God is the opposite and is ready to forgive you in a moment’s notice.
So, what does God want? Why does it seem like He’s cold and not listening or engaging in your life? The simple answer; He wants to spend time with you and build a relationship together.
In my experience, I have learned that this comes down to each of us on an individual level. God hasn’t grouped us together as one. It’s a personal walk with God. He is with you right now and is waiting for you to move towards Him. God is omnipresent, which means He is everywhere always. He never leaves you. If you have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior, then God has given you His Holy Spirit as a Seal and a Helper. The Holy Spirit will never leave you, either.
If you are feeling like God is distant, the way to get close to Him is to build your relationship with Him. This is it. There is no other trick. He simply wants to spend time with you. This should be good news. Aren’t you be glad it doesn’t cost 6 payments of $59.99 to get His blessings? Of course. His love is free, but relationships do require some effort. And, guess what? God will even help you with this if you are willing.
Here are 5 ways to please the Lord
When it comes to walking with God, this is just it; you must “walk” with God. He is the Almighty and can do some wonderful things in your life, but without your commitment, He’s just not too likely to make your life amazing.
I had this idea that all I had to do was pray once in a while and that He would miraculously open the floodgates of Heaven in my life, but I was always left discouraged. Eventually, I learned that my relationship with God needed to be more than, “Take, take, take.”
I learned that there are many factors involved in following Jesus and being in a relationship with Him. Let’s look at 5 steps to take right now that can get you on the right path to building, or rebuilding, a relationship with God.
- Fully surrender to God as Lord in your life
- Purify yourself of sinful and evil living
- Get in the habit of daily prayer and bible reading
- Practice praising and worshiping God in all situations
- Practice good stewardship with all that God has given you

1. Fully surrender to God as Lord in your life
What does it mean to “surrender” to God, anyway? Think of it like this: If you are out for a run in the morning and there is a headwind, you will fight for every forward step you take. Your pace will be way off, and you will be laboring heavily.
Now, consider when you get to your turnaround point where you start to head home. Now the wind isn’t fighting you; it’s pushing you. Now your pace has increased tremendously, you are moving much easier and more gracefully towards your goal without exerting more energy.
This is exactly what it means to surrender to God. Instead of fighting Him every step of the way, you say, “Okay God, your Will be done in my life; not mine!”
Surrendering to God requires being done with pride. People that have too much pride will be the ones to say that they don’t have any pride in their life. Going to God in humble submission means to put Him first in your life and be willing to do away with self-satisfaction and self-pleasure. It’s great to have goals, but God wants to be part of that plan and He wants to make that possible for you.
“Commit your actions to the LORD,
and your plans will succeed.”

2. Purify yourself of sinful and evil living
The bible tells us in Romans 3:23 that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. So, the question is; are you living in sin?
Well, if you aren’t sure, ask God. He will put it on your heart, and He will show you. I’ve done this process numerous times in my life. You see, the thing with Satan is, he is subtle and smooth. If you aren’t paying attention to how you’re living or what you’re thinking, he will pull you right onto the path to Hell.
So, what can you do to purify yourself of sinful living? Confess your known sins to God and ask Him to reveal any other sins in your life. Repent from committing those sins or living a sinful life. Repenting from something means to turn away from it.
The next step is closing up all the doors and windows that the devil can get in through. This means, anything that is sinful, or anything that wouldn’t please God, needs to go. If you want to be on God’s good side, then you need to do away with anything that displeases Him. It might be difficult to get rid of some things, as this might even be a group of people who are poor influences and who block you from living for God.
Anything you give up for God, He will restore in a better fashion. On the other hand, bad attitudes, gossip, hate, complaining, pride; anytime you do these, you open the door for the devil to come into your life and wreak havoc.
I have written a book, titled; “Don’t let the devil defeat you.” I wrote this book to expose the plans and actions of the devil and to provide people with the necessary knowledge and tools to kick the devil out of their lives once and for all. Check it out as it’s always a great idea to have more tools and knowledge.
3. Get in the habit of daily prayer and bible reading
Did you know that praying to God and reading the bible is your direct communication to God? By praying, you are talking to Him and communicating your desires or gratitude to Him. By reading the bible, which is known as the Word of God, you are giving Him a chance to respond.
The bible is known as a “living” book. Many people have received great insight and truth for their lives by reading the bible. Even skeptics and Atheists have developed a relationship with God simply by reading through the bible; even if it was just to prove everyone wrong.
The same is true for you; if you want to draw close to God, then you need to put yourself in that position. Reading the Bible each day, that’s daily, God will start to give you clarity in your life. I can’t explain how it works, but that it works.
“For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.”
God’s Spirit in you will communicate with your spirit. When you get the devil and his ways out of your life, you close the door to him and open it to God. By not having the clutter of the enemy in your mind and life, you can become more focused on God and what He’s telling you.
When you spend time with God each day in prayer and reading, it feels like He draws closer to you. Since God is always there with you, what’s really happening is that the fog is clearing away and you are starting to gain that clarity for what He wants in your life. When you seek Him each day, and in every situation, He gives you peace and rest and joy in your soul.
4. Practice praising and worshiping God in all situations
There is tremendous power in praise and worship. Praising God means to be thankful and to attribute all that you have to Him. Worshiping God means to know that He is “Your God” and that He is the most powerful of all. It means that you know in your heart that He’s the most important thing and that your life is meant for His service.
I struggled for so many years to worship God. I simply felt like I didn’t know how. I would go to church and I’d see people raising their hands in the air during music worship, but it felt awkward to me and I just didn’t do it. Later, I learned that you don’t have to raise your hands to worship God. But if God is the most important person in your life and you love Him, then you will probably want to lift your hands to Him.
If the devil is beating you up, the best way to defeat him instantly is to put on an attitude of gratitude and worship God. Get into God’s glory right away and the devil will leave.
For me, I take a minute and picture myself in a closed-in room kneeling before two thrones; God and Jesus. I just bask in their Glory. I picture myself singing to them and giving thanks for everything that comes to mind. When I snap out of it, there is no sign of the devil and I am refreshed.
I don’t know if this little exercise will work for you or anyone else, but I’ve found it helps me get my focus off the bad and onto the good in a hurry.
When it comes to praise and worship of God, just know that God created mankind to choose Him and to worship Him. That is the Will of God for your life. True worship to God is when you are willing to live for Him and help others even when He doesn’t give you all that you desire. This is what pleases Him.
5. Practice good stewardship with all that God has given you
“The master was full of praise. ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’”
There is nothing more that God wants to say to you than, “Well done good and faithful servant.” For me, there’s nothing I’d rather hear, either.
Pleasing God requires faith, a good attitude and heart, and the right habits and actions. Good stewardship is all these. Knowing in faith that God provides all that you have; being grateful for all that you have; and finally, treating all that you have as though it belongs to the lord – being sure to keep it well and return it in better condition than you found it. This pleases the Lord.
I haven’t been a good steward of all that God gave me. In fact, I messed everything up and am surprised I didn’t lose it all. I spent years as a drunk who would mistreat his wife and family; I took everything for granted and didn’t seem to care about anything; I racked up tremendous debt for my family. And guess who showed up to tell me of my failure? That’s right; the devil.
Fortunately, I learned to kick the devil out and close all the doors and windows to him. I learned that the more I read the bible and prayed, the closer I got to God. I also learned that the closer I got to God, the easier it was for me to make better decisions and to become a good steward over what God entrusts me with. I still have some remaining consequences in my life from poor decisions, but overall, God is restoring my marriage, my attitude, and we are on our way to a better financial position.
If you are struggling to maintain what God has entrusted you with, seek God’s help. Understand that good stewardship is important to God and before He trusts you with more, He wants to see you handle what you currently have.
