A group of young individuals who are looking up in deep thought. Did you know there is a devil?

James 4:7
“So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

The bible tells us that we have an enemy who is working against us. He is working against us in our relationships, in our workplace, in our communities, and in our churches. He is described as being crafty and clever. He is known for deception and trickery. Some know him as a liar. His name is Satan, and he is real.

It’s interesting to know that there is a large part of the Christian community who doesn’t believe in a devil, or, Satan. They believe in God, but not the devil. I wonder why God wrote in James 4 for us to resist the devil; who’s the Lord talking about here; some mystical being that doesn’t exist? Is God confused?

The bible, which is the written Word of God, tells in great detail about the enemy and his character. It talks about where he came from, what he does, and where he’s going. So, again, I find this interesting that so many don’t believe in the devil.

I think we should be very careful here, and I will explain why in this article, to realize there is a devil and that he’s very present in society now. He has only a short time to accomplish his work, and he sure is doing just that.

There are two things that are going on here; Satan is causing people to fear about Hell, which is also a real place, and because of this, many people are choosing to deny reality. Also, he is telling them that the devil and hell is all just made up. Why? Because, we won’t fight against something we don’t believe exists, right?

Demons don’t exist either, some say

Luke 10:17
“When the seventy-two disciples returned, they joyfully reported to him, ‘Lord, even the demons obey us when we use your name!’”

Here in Luke 10, the Disciples have been going around and they have cast out demons from people. Again, why is it that people don’t believe in demons, which are evil spirits? Jesus cast out evil spirits from people many times. If the devil doesn’t exist and demons don’t exist, what entity came out of these people with such violence when the Name of Jesus was used?

Okay, so I am well aware that there is a high level of denial going on in the church and in the Christian society. Of course, no one wants to believe that there is a devil or such a terrible place as Hell. Nobody wants to believe that a person, maybe that very individual, might go to a place of eternal torment.

I understand that this fear is well-warranted. This is the exact reason the bible has been written; this is what Jesus came to save us from. We should never operate in a spirit of fear, which is from the devil, however, this is a healthy fear that we should have. Unlike other fears that are generally just “what if’s,” this one is based on reality. But there is something we can do about it; we can fight back.

There is power in the Name of Jesus

Luke 10:19
“Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.”

Satan, who is the devil, is out there huffing and puffing and making people scared. Sometimes, he doesn’t make people scared; sometimes he makes people chase fantasies and empty dreams (this draws our attention away from God). Sometimes, he makes people believe that Heaven and Hell and God and Jesus and Satan are all just made up and that the bible was written by a bunch of common men.

This is what makes him dangerous. It’s not that he is a powerful being; it’s that he tricks us into believing that he’s powerful. Jesus took away all his power when He died on the cross and was resurrected three days later. Jesus overcame the power of the enemy, of sin, and of death, when God raised Him from the dead. Satan does know this, but Satan is counting on the masses to not know this, or, at least to not believe it.

It’s us who give him power. Satan is only one guy. He is present only in one place at one time. God is omnipresent, which means that He is everywhere always. What the devil does have is a great army of servants who go all over the world in his name deceiving many. These evil spirits come through any openings they can.

It is us who lets them in. It’s us who provides them a home to live in. When do we do this? When we entertain evil activity or engage in sinful behavior. When we do this, we literally invite the enemy in. So, how do we get rid of them? We cast them out; just like the disciples did; just like Jesus did. We use the power and authority that is in the name of Jesus.

If Satan is attacking us, we must say with confidence, “I command you to leave now, Satan, in the Name of Jesus.” Because Jesus is greater, the devil must obey. This is temporary and he will be watching for another opening.

God has given us protection from the enemy

Ephesians 6:13-17
“Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

The Armor of God is available to all of us. This is what we need to put on each day when we wake up as we wake up into a spiritual battle that exists around us and within us. What is the point of this battle, anyways?

Well, the winner gets our soul. If God wins, He gets to spend eternity with us in Heaven. This is His greatest hope. If Satan wins, he gets to torment us for eternity in Hell. This is his greatest hope.

Neil T Anderson has helped many people to break free from the bondage of sin. His books Victory Over the Darkness and Bondage Breaker are powerful to help you to break free from negative thoughts and bondage. Also available on DVD (Victory Over the Darkness), and DVD (Bondage Breaker)

When we put on this armor, we are effectively making a choice to stand against the enemy. We put on the belt of truth and the helmet of Salvation and we take up the Sword deliberately, not by accident. We don’t accidently wake up fully prepped for war. Everyday is a new day and everyday we must submit to the authority of God. Each day, we must read our bible and be refreshed in mind and we must pray and be refreshed in Spirit.

The reason we read the bible is to be informed about the struggles that we face on earth and what we can do to avoid them. We learn that the enemy is out to destroy us, and if he wins, we will be eternally separated from God. The bible teaches us how to have faith in Jesus, all while the enemy is attacking us.

The only way we will know this stuff is by reading the Word of God each and every day.

God has given us the information about Heaven and Hell

If we never learn about Hell, and how bad it will be, then how can we fear going there? Likewise, if we never learn about Heaven, and how great it will be, then how can we get excited about going there?

This whole issue comes down to knowledge and choice. At first, we don’t understand these things. When we don’t study something, we simply don’t know. But after we learn, then if we still choose to do something, it is a deliberate choice.

God is trying to warn us of the dangers of the enemy. He has given us the information in the bible about Heaven and Hell for a reason. He has people spread out across the world telling of Jesus and a coming Day of Judgment; a day where we will be judged according to how we lived, either in accordance to God’s Will or in sin (2 Corinthians 5:10).

We are warned that we only get this short time on earth to choose God. If we abuse this time and live only to please ourselves, which is also living under the spirit of Satan, then we risk our chance for eternity in Heaven. Sometimes things happen; they’re called accidents. Some accidents claim our lives instantly. If you don’t know Jesus as your Lord and you get in an accident that claims your life instantly, then you will not go through the Gates of Heaven. This is a truth written by God in the bible.

John 3:3
“Jesus replied, ‘I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.’”

This is exactly why Satan is out deceiving people and making them believe they don’t need Jesus or that the devil doesn’t exist. If the devil doesn’t exist and Hell doesn’t exist, then no matter how bad we are, we will just go to Heaven, right?

Careful, because our default destination is Hell. We must choose Jesus if we want to go to Heaven.

Conclusion

Some of the greatest deceptions of the enemy is that there is no enemy; that there’s always time to change later; that a God of love won’t send people to such a terrible place as Hell. Well, there is devil, time is short, and God will Judge according to His Law.

God is a God of Truth and Justice. We must be careful to not create a god in our mind that is made to fit our desires and comfort level. The whole description of Heaven might come across as vague, but the whole description of God isn’t. The bible, from beginning to end, shows God’s character. We are wise to spend as much time as possible learning about who Jesus is and how He wants us to live. The more we know, the better off we are.

I encourage you to spend time learning about spiritual warfare and take a deep look at your life to see the ways the enemy has been attacking you. If Satan isn’t attacking you, it’s possible that you aren’t a threat to him. This means, if you are already living only to please your sinful nature, he knows what your destination will be, so he doesn’t have to waste time working you over. Think about it. Make a choice in your life.

Choose wisely!
