So many of us will deal with thoughts of doubt and worry each day. Did I do the right thing, am I spending enough time with my kids. Will the money stretch to the end of the month or even to the end of the pay period? We can get so caught up in anxious thoughts that worry consumes our day. This article will discuss this and offer 5 bible verses to help combat these negative thoughts.
Worry and thoughts of doubt are very natural to each of us. If you are dealing with this, you’re not alone. Yet the Bible says many times do not fear, do not be anxious and worry for nothing. However, I want to also expose the plans of Satan concerning this topic of fear and worry and doubt. Some people don’t know that the devil is real and that he’s out causing harm to people everywhere. But I do. He has done me much harm in my life.
You don’t have to let the devil defeat you
If you don’t follow God, then by default, you are following Satan (Matthew 12:30). Now, to follow Satan doesn’t necessarily mean that you literally worship him and do evil things. But by denying Jesus and the protection of the Holy Spirit, you are giving Satan power and dominion over your life.
I write often about the topic of spiritual warfare because I know there is a devil behind the pain and turmoil in the world. There are people who don’t know that the devil is real and that he’s out causing harm to people everywhere. But I do. He has done me much harm in my life. However, I won’t be going into much detail about that in this article, but just understand those thoughts of fear and worry and doubt most often come from the enemy. The good news here is that you don’t have to give in to these thoughts. The devil can’t make you do something; he is a tempter and liar who will try to convince you to do evil. The outcome is in your hands.
Overcoming stuff like worry and fear is very possible when you embark on a relationship with Jesus Christ. If you can understand that the Spirit of God is more powerful than the spirit of Satan, then you’ll find it easy to understand that you can overcome the worst of attacks from Satan. But you must be rooted in the protection of the Holy Spirit, who comes and lives within you when you accept Jesus as Lord and Savior.
Reading the bible and learning about the promises of God is your defense against the enemy. Learning about the authority of Jesus over everything will help you when you are being attacked by the devil. By having the Holy Spirit in you, you can have the power to live apart from sin and to cast the devil away from you when he is trying to deceive or tempt you.

5 bible verses to help you overcome worry
If the devil is giving you thoughts of worry and causing you to doubt all good things in life, the best thing you can do is to meditate and study the Word of God for yourself. It pretty much doesn’t even matter which part of the Bible that you read. Simply reading the Bible is a form of spiritual warfare against the devil.
However, it’s generally better to have a method to your reading of the bible. Knowing various Scriptures to go to for various emotions and thoughts is best to help you overcome the attacks. There are thousands of encouraging promises from God scattered throughout the bible, so, finding a few for the mood you’re in shouldn’t be too challenging.
In this article, I’ll help get you started with 5 verses concerning worry and anxiety. I encourage you to grab a notebook and make several sections for different negative moods, each with 5 to 10 verses that you can go to in an instant. When you are overwhelmed by the enemy with fear, worry, stress, anger, sadness, loneliness, resentment, or guilt, you can reference your list of Scripture and read about these in the bible with a more direct and intentional purpose.
Jesus was tempted by Satan when He spent 40 days and nights praying and fasting in the wilderness (read about this in Matthew 4:1-11). Jesus overcame the attacks of Satan through knowledge and the use of Bible Scripture. We’re expected to do the same thing.
Here’s my pick of 5 verses to quickly curb thoughts of worry:
- Philippians 4:6-7
- 2 Timothy 1:7
- Philippians 4:13
- Matthew 6:34
- John 14:27
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”
Praying to God and giving Him your worries is the best thing you can do. Sadly, many leave this as the last hope and last resort. Going to God should be the first thing you do. It’s God who has the power to deliver you from the hands of the enemy; it’s God who can deliver you out of spiritual bondage and sin.
Praying to God requires faith. Knowledge of God helps make this process easy. Reading the Bible daily will equip you with the knowledge about God that you need to boost your faith. As your faith develops, you will have an easier time believing that God is answering your prayers according to His Will.
For many, and especially me, my faith was small. When I’d pray, almost instantly I would doubt that God was going to answer my prayer. Knowing the character of God and knowing what His desires for you are is the best way to overcome this. When you know His Will, then you’ll pray according to it and you’ll be confident that He will answer your prayers.
Overcoming the spirit of fear and worry is the desire of God. Knowing this, when you are struggling with these thoughts and emotions, pray to God about it and give these to Him. Trust that He is there helping you and receive the peace of mind that He gives. Don’t give any more thought to that which you just gave Him and go on with your day thanking God and worshiping Him. You will be amazed by the freedom you can get in an instant.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”
Satan is a bully who will do all he can to make you live in fear. But if you are rooted in a solid relationship with Jesus, the devil won’t be successful. Spending time each day with Jesus in prayer and reading the bible will keep your mind fresh and you’ll be alert for when the devil tries to attack you.
It’s when you let your guard down that the enemy will overcome you. Following Jesus is a daily thing. From the time you wake up until bedtime again, Satan is watching for an opening in your life to come in and mess you up.

Regular praise and worship of Jesus, as well as, regular fellowship with other believers is a great way to stay in the right mindset. It’s when you are alone that you are weak. By surrendering to God each day and throughout the day, you will grow stronger in your faith and your spiritual maturity will also increase. As this happens, you will spend more time thinking about the Will of God and less time giving in to the lies of the devil.
Worry and fear are often lies we listen to. They are negative thoughts that generally have no grounds or truth. But if you spend time feeding these thoughts, they can grow. Understand where these thoughts come from and seek protection from the Holy Spirit. Then, instead of being overwhelmed by a spirit of fear, you’ll be overwhelmed by a Spirit of love and encouragement.
“For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.”
Perhaps one of the most popular verses in the bible, this one promises that anything is possible for a follower of Jesus. This is definitely good news when the devil is trying to attack you.
But this strength is only found through Jesus. You must go to Him and seek Him when you are being attacked, as He won’t simply come to you. God always has His hand stretched out towards you as He wants to help carry you along throughout life, but you also have to reach up and grab onto His hand. He wants you to meet Him halfway.
God wants you to choose Him. He will never turn you away. But He wants loyalty and dedication. He wants you to turn away from the devil fully and devote your life to Him fully. But when you do, you receive the full power of the Holy Spirit; the same power that Jesus used to do miracles and to cast out demons and the same power that was used to raise Jesus from the dead.
If you look at it this way, you can see just how much power there is in a relationship with Jesus. But it’s up to you to fully surrender to Him and to seek Him in all you do. When you do try something and the devil says you can’t, remember the power of the Holy Spirit in you and send the devil away.
“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So, don’t be troubled or afraid.”
Do you have peace in your life? So many people search for peace in many ways: decluttering their homes; minimalist lifestyles; building financial wealth; exercise. But this is just a deception of the enemy. It’s God who gives true peace. Jesus Himself promised to leave you with His peace.
When you are experiencing hard times in life and are overwhelmed with worry, turn to God and give Him your troubles. He will exchange it with peace if you let Him. The victory comes when you give it to Him and leave it with Him. All too often we give Him our problems and within a short time, we take the problems back by thinking about them again and worrying about them.
Trusting God is a habit that is worth building. Casting your cares on the Lord and focusing on praising Him and worshiping Him will bring peace in your life, but it’s a habit that must be developed.
“So, don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.”
Satan is good at casting thoughts of worry about the future on people. If you find that you do worry about what’s to come, remember, that stuff is in the future and things can change. Your future events have much to do with today’s decisions. Focus on the issues of today and make good choices today wherever you can. This will result in a better outcome for tomorrow.
As for what might go wrong, think instead about what might go right and trust God to guide and direct you throughout your day.
All any of us can do is to pray about the future. It’s only God who truly knows your future, so let Him worry about that. If you are walking with Jesus each day and striving to please God, your future will work out according to God’s plan. In the event, you follow Jesus daily and stay out of sinful living and something bad does happen, then you must understand that God allowed it and likely there is a lesson in it.
Romans 8:28 tells you that God works things out for your good when you follow Jesus. This means, even the harmful attacks and that which is meant for bad, God can turn around and make into something good for you. So, trust God and focus on what you can do for Him each day. Give no time or attention to thoughts of worry and send the devil away.
Worry comes from the devil. His plan is to cause you to worry and to doubt God. By doing this, he can break your trust in God. If you don’t trust God, you won’t have a good relationship with Him. If you don’t have a relationship with Jesus, you don’t qualify for eternal life in Heaven. This is why the devil works tirelessly to separate you from God.
Don’t let the devil win. Learn about his plans and strategies and overcome his attacks. Learn the Bible and gain discernment and understanding. This way, you will see these thoughts for what they are, and you won’t sabotage your life by living in worry. Anxiety and fear will destroy you if you let it. Instead, give your attention to God and give Him your worries. Trust Him to show you the way and do what you can to make good choices to stay out of sinful activities and sinful thinking.
Building a relationship with Jesus is a daily thing. It’s ongoing and won’t end until God calls you home. Until then, God expects you to trust Him and to seek Him each day and in everything you do. But He promises to stay with you and help you, and despite what the devil makes you think, God has a great plan for your life if you’ll let Him help you.
